Standard Box Types and Volumes

Single-gang and multi-gang boxes:

  • Single-gang boxes are used for one switch or outlet, while multi-gang boxes accommodate multiple devices in one location.
  • Each single-gang section must not exceed 1640 mL in volume, and ganged boxes can combine multiple sections up to the equivalent of a 10-gang size, with each section still limited to 1640 mL . Junction and pull boxes:
  • These boxes are designed to protect wire splices and branch connections. Their size must allow sufficient clearance for wiring, cover installation, and future access . Round and octagon boxes:
  • Commonly used for ceiling-mounted fixtures such as lights, fans, and smoke detectors. Depth is critical to accommodate multiple wires safely .

Box Fill Calculations

The Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) requires calculating the internal volume based on the number and type of conductors, devices, and wire connectors:

  • Conductors: Each conductor entering the box counts individually; pigtails do not count.
  • Devices: Each device counts as if it occupies two conductors.
  • Wire nuts: Counted in pairs.
  • Ground wires: Do not count toward box fill . For example, using CEC Table 23, a #8 AWG conductor requires 45.1 mL per conductor. If a box contains 10 conductors, the minimum box volume would be 451 mL . Always use the largest wire size to determine the required volume.

Installation Considerations

  • Ensure all wiring is supported and terminated inside the box.
  • Leave sufficient space for splicing and device installation.
  • Boxes must be accessible for inspection and future maintenance .
  • Deeper boxes are preferred when multiple wires are present to reduce overcrowding and improve safety .
