Malta Joins the 24-Core Figure-Eight Optical Cable

Malta is enhancing its fiber optic infrastructure by integrating a 24-core figure-8 optical cable, strengthening connectivity and supporting both electricity and telecommunications networks.

Overview of the Project

Malta is currently implementing a second submarine power interconnection with Sicily, which includes a fiber optic component integrated into a high-voltage submarine cable. This project, managed by Nexans, involves manufacturing fiber optic elements in Norway and high-voltage components in Charleston, USA, before final assembly. Once operational, the interconnector will improve Malta's electricity stability, enhance integration with the European grid, and reduce carbon emissions by over 13 million tonnes .

Figure-8 Fiber Optic Cable Technology

The 24-core GYTC8S figure-8 cable is a self-supporting outdoor fiber optic cable designed for aerial deployment. Its distinctive figure-8 cross-section combines optical fibers with a stranded steel wire strength member, providing excellent tensile strength and mechanical durability. The cable is waterproof, crush-resistant, and armored with corrugated steel tape, making it suitable for both aerial and duct installations . This design allows for easy installation without additional support hardware, making it ideal for utility co-deployment and broadband expansion .

Strategic Significance for Malta

By adopting the 24-core figure-8 cable, Malta is not only upgrading its electricity interconnection but also enhancing its telecommunications infrastructure. Figure-8 cables are widely used for rural broadband, 5G backhaul, and utility co-deployment, enabling Malta to expand high-speed connectivity and support future digital services . This integration aligns with Malta's broader strategy to strengthen European grid connections and improve energy and data resilience.

Technical Advantages

  • Self-supporting design reduces the need for additional poles or support structures.
  • High mechanical and environmental performance ensures durability in harsh conditions.
  • Low dispersion and attenuation maintain high-quality signal transmission.
  • Corrugated steel tape armor provides protection against physical damage and gunshot resistance . Overall, Malta's adoption of the 24-core figure-8 optical cable represents a major step in modernizing its energy and digital infrastructure, supporting both sustainable energy goals and advanced telecommunications capabilities.
