Fiber Optic Repeater Section Testing Procedure

Testing a fiber optic repeater section involves verifying continuity, insertion loss, and signal integrity across the fiber link, including the repeater, using calibrated light sources, power meters, and OTDR measurements.

Equipment Required

  • Optical Test Source: LED or laser appropriate for the fiber type (multimode: 850/1300 nm, singlemode: 1310/1550 nm)
  • Optical Power Meter: Calibrated at the same wavelength as the source
  • Launch and Receive Cables: Same fiber type and connector type as the system
  • Mating Adapters: Compatible with connectors on the fiber and test cables
  • Cleaning Supplies: For connectors and adapters to ensure accurate measurements
  • Optional OTDR: For verifying individual splices and repeater performance

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Warm-Up and Setup Turn on the optical source and power meter, allowing them to stabilize. Connect the launch cable to the source and leave it attached throughout the test .
  2. Connector and Adapter Cleaning Clean all connectors and mating adapters to prevent measurement errors due to contamination .
  3. Reference Measurement Establish a 0 dB reference using a short reference cable or the launch cable directly connected to the power meter. This baseline accounts for the inherent loss of the test setup .
  4. Connect to Repeater Section Attach the launch cable to the input of the repeater section and the receive cable to the output. Ensure all connections are secure and properly mated .
  5. Insertion Loss Measurement Measure the optical power at the output and calculate the insertion loss: Loss (dB)=10log10PinPout This includes the loss of the fiber, connectors, splices, and the repeater itself .
  6. OTDR Testing (Optional but Recommended) Use an OTDR to verify the integrity of the fiber and repeater section. This allows detection of high-loss splices, reflections, or faults within the section .
  7. Polarity and Continuity Check Confirm that the signal path is continuous and that the correct fiber polarity is maintained through the repeater section .
  8. Documentation Record all measurements, including insertion loss, OTDR traces, and any anomalies. Compare results against system specifications or industry standards to certify the section .

Best Practices

  • Always clean connectors before testing to avoid false high-loss readings.
  • Use launch cables long enough to allow the OTDR to stabilize and accurately measure the first connector and repeater input.
  • Perform tests at multiple wavelengths if the system operates over a range of wavelengths.
  • Repeat measurements to ensure consistency and reliability. By following this procedure, a fiber optic repeater section can be thoroughly tested for performance, ensuring that the system meets design specifications and operates reliably in the network .
