Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM), also known as Digital Diagnostics Monitoring (DDM), is a standardized feature defined by SFF-8472 that enables switches and other network devices to monitor the health of optical transceivers in real time . DOM transforms a passive transceiver into an intelligent component, allowing network engineers to detect degradation or impending failures before they impact service . This capability is essential for modern optical networks, where links operate near physical limits and even minor issues can degrade performance .

Key Parameters Monitored

DOM provides continuous access to critical transceiver metrics, including:

  • Transmit (TX) power – measures the optical signal sent by the transceiver
  • Receive (RX) power – measures the optical signal received
  • Temperature – monitors the internal module temperature to prevent overheating
  • Laser bias current – indicates the operating condition of the laser diode
  • Supply voltage – ensures the transceiver receives proper power These parameters help identify performance degradation, environmental stress, or potential hardware failure.

Monitoring Methods

Switches with DOM support allow monitoring through both graphical interfaces and command-line interfaces (CLI):

  • GUI Monitoring: On Cisco Meraki switches, navigate to Switching > Monitor > Switches, select a switch, then click the Ports tab. Operational SFP ports display DOM metrics and alerts, with historical data available in chart form .
  • CLI Monitoring: Commands like show interface transceiver detail provide TX/RX power, temperature, and threshold status. Alarms and warnings are indicated with symbols such as ++ for high alarm or -- for low alarm .

Alarm and Threshold Management

DOM includes factory-programmed thresholds for each parameter. Alerts are triggered when values exceed normal operating ranges, enabling proactive maintenance and reducing mean time to repair (MTTR), .
