What is a Fiber Optic Pigtail?

Pigtails are commonly used in single-mode applications and are preferred over patch cords for field terminations because they combine factory precision with flexible field splicing .

Tools and Preparation

Before connecting a pigtail, ensure you have the following tools:

  • Fiber stripper to remove the protective coating from the fiber
  • Fiber cleaver for precise cutting of the fiber end
  • Fusion splicer or mechanical splicing kit
  • Isopropyl alcohol wipes for cleaning
  • Protective splice tray to secure the joint Proper cleaning and preparation are critical, as dust or misalignment can cause high signal loss .

Splicing Process

  1. Strip and Clean the Fiber: Remove the outer jacket and coating from the fiber cable and the pigtail's bare end. Clean both fibers with alcohol wipes to remove debris .

  5. Connect the Pigtail: Plug the factory-terminated connector into the desired equipment, patch panel, or ODF port. Test the connection for signal integrity using an optical power meter or OTDR .

  • Connector Type: Choose the correct connector (LC, SC, ST, etc.) to match your equipment .
  • Polish Type: Ensure the pigtail's connector polish (UPC, APC) matches the system requirements to minimize back reflection .
  • Testing: Always verify the splice with proper testing equipment to ensure low insertion loss and high network reliability . By following these steps, you can achieve a reliable, low-loss connection between a fiber optic cable and a pigtail, ensuring optimal network performance and long-term stability .
