Link Aggregation (LAG)

Some managed switches support Link Aggregation (LAG), also known as port trunking, NIC teaming, or bonding. This feature allows multiple physical Ethernet ports to be combined into a single logical connection, increasing bandwidth and providing redundancy. Both ends of the connection (switch-to-switch or switch-to-server) must support LAG, and a protocol like LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol) is often used to manage the aggregated links . Without LAG, connecting two cables between switches can create a network loop, causing broadcast storms and network failure .

Switch Stacking

Certain switches, especially enterprise-grade models, support stacking, which connects multiple switches to function as a single logical switch. Stacking uses dedicated stack ports and cables, allowing up to eight switches to share data and power resources efficiently . This is different from simply plugging two Ethernet cables into standard ports, as stacking requires hardware and software support.

Unmanaged Switches

Unmanaged switches cannot safely accept dual cables for the same connection. Attempting to do so can create loops and disrupt the network . These switches lack the intelligence to manage multiple links or prevent broadcast storms.

Practical Considerations

  • If your goal is increased bandwidth for a single device, ensure both the switch and the device support NIC teaming or LAG .
  • For redundancy, LAG or stacking is required; simply plugging in two cables without support will not work.
  • Consumer-grade switches may support LACP, but it is more common in managed switches.
  • RJ45 network selector switches are different; they allow switching between networks but do not combine bandwidth .
