Link aggregation combines multiple NAS network interfaces to increase reliability and distribute traffic, but it does not double single-device speeds.

What Link Aggregation Does

Link aggregation, also called trunking, bonding, or teaming, allows a NAS to use multiple Ethernet connections simultaneously. Its main benefits are:

  • Load balancing: Network traffic is distributed across multiple connections, improving overall network efficiency when multiple devices access the NAS simultaneously .
  • Fault tolerance: If one connection fails, traffic automatically reroutes to the remaining active connections, maintaining network availability . It is important to note that link aggregation does not increase the speed for a single device; a single client will still be limited by the speed of one LAN port .

NAS Requirements

  • The NAS must have at least two LAN ports .
  • The NAS interface will show a new bonded interface after aggregation, which can be configured like a normal LAN interface .
  • Supported aggregation modes include:
    • Adaptive Load Balancing: Works without switch support, automatically balancing traffic .
    • IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic Link Aggregation (LACP): Requires a managed switch that supports LACP .
    • Balance XOR / Static Link Aggregation: Requires static configuration on the switch .
    • Active Backup / Round-Robin / Broadcast: Depending on NAS brand, these modes provide failover or load balancing .

Switch Requirements

  • All NAS cables must connect to the same switch or stackable switches configured in the same VLAN .
  • For LACP or static aggregation, the switch must support the corresponding mode.
  • Managed switches are generally required for advanced aggregation modes .

Setup Steps (Synology Example)

  1. Connect all NAS LAN ports to the switch.
  2. Open Control Panel > Network > Network Interface.
  3. Click Create > Create Bond.
  4. Select the desired aggregation mode (e.g., Adaptive Load Balancing or IEEE 802.3ad).
  5. Select all physical interfaces to include in the bond.
  6. Configure IP settings (DHCP or static) and complete the setup .

Practical Considerations

  • Link aggregation is most beneficial in multi-device environments, such as multiple clients accessing the NAS simultaneously .
  • Single large file transfers from one device will not exceed the speed of a single LAN port.
  • Proper cabling and switch configuration are critical; misconfiguration can result in network issues or loss of NAS access .
  • For higher throughput per device, consider SMB Multi-Channel in addition to link aggregation . By following these guidelines, link aggregation can improve network reliability and overall performance for NAS deployments in home or office networks.
