Distribution box terminals should be wired systematically, connecting the main supply to the main breaker, then to protective devices, and finally to branch circuits with proper neutral and earth connections.

Preparation and Safety

Before wiring, ensure the main power is completely turned off and verify with a tester. Wear insulating gloves, safety glasses, and slip-resistant shoes. Inspect the distribution box, circuit breakers, terminal blocks, and wires for damage, and prepare tools such as screwdrivers, wire strippers, and a multimeter .

Terminal Wiring Procedure

  1. Main Supply Connection: Connect the incoming phase (live) wire to the main MCB or main terminal. Connect the neutral wire to the neutral bus bar and the earth wire to the earth bus bar .
  2. Protective Devices:
    • If using an RCCB, connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB.
    • For double-pole MCBs used for special loads, connect both phase and neutral from the RCCB output to the MCB input.
    • For single-pole MCBs, connect only the phase wire from the RCCB output to the MCB input .
  3. Branch Circuit Wiring: Connect the output terminals of each MCB to the corresponding load. Ensure the neutral and earth wires are connected to their respective bus bars .
  4. Wiring Direction and Organization:
    • Main circuit wiring generally enters from the left side of the box, and outgoing branch circuits exit from the right.
    • Use plastic ties to bind wires neatly, maintaining uniform spacing and straight runs .
  5. Marking and Labeling: Clearly mark AC/DC, voltage levels, and circuit identification on the terminals and wires to facilitate maintenance and troubleshooting .

Final Checks

  • Test insulation resistance and circuit continuity using a multimeter.
  • Verify that all connections are tight and secure, and that breakers and fuses match the rated load .
  • Ensure there is adequate spacing for heat dissipation and that the box is level and stable . Following this method ensures a safe, organized, and maintainable distribution box installation, reducing the risk of short circuits, overloads, and electrical hazards.
