Horizontal and Vertical Support Spacing

For horizontal runs, cable trays are typically supported every 1.5 to 3 meters to prevent sagging and maintain system integrity, while allowing easy access for maintenance and inspection . For vertical runs, supports should be placed according to the vertical spacing requirements, which may be more frequent depending on the cable weight and length of the run . Long vertical runs exceeding 32 meters should include strain relief sections, offset by at least two cable diameters to reduce mechanical stress .

Parallel and Adjacent Trays

When installing two cable trays in parallel at the same height, maintain a minimum distance of 0.6 meters to allow maintenance access, proper airflow, and heat dissipation . For power and signal cable trays, a minimum separation of 0.5 meters is recommended to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI). If the trays are shielded, this spacing can be reduced to 0.3 meters .

Hanger and Support Considerations

Hanging rod supports should be at least 8 mm in diameter to ensure stability for vertical runs and prevent stress on cables at bends .   • Maintain minimum vertical clearance of 150 mm between floor-mounted trays or between upper and lower trays to facilitate ventilation, heat dissipation, and future expansion .
  • Ensure that cables are not exposed to undue mechanical strain and that terminations are free from stress .
  • Use metallic supports rather than relying solely on cable ties or non-metallic clips for suspended or surface-mounted cables . By following these spacing guidelines, cable tray systems will remain structurally sound, safe, and maintainable while minimizing risks of sagging, interference, and fire hazards.
