Busbar-dedicated cable trays are installed by planning the routing, securing supports, lifting busbar sections safely, and connecting joints while following safety and manufacturer guidelines.

Pre-Installation Planning

Before installation, conduct a site inspection to evaluate routing, obstacles, and floor or ceiling conditions. Consider changes in direction, obstructions like walls or fire breaks, and ensure that all necessary accessories for bends, level changes, and feedthroughs are available . Determine the conductor rating and the number of cables to ensure the tray or busbar system can accommodate the load without overcrowding .

Support and Mounting

Install support brackets such as Unistrut at intervals specified by the manufacturer, ensuring each busbar section has at least two supports . Supports must be level and plumb to maintain alignment. For vertical risers longer than 2 meters, it may be easier to lower the busbar from the floor above or ceiling attachment point .

Lifting and Handling

Busbar sections are heavy and require careful handling. Use mechanical lifting equipment like Geni lifts, scissor lifts, or platform lifts, ensuring the load does not exceed the safe working limit . Always secure the busbar to lifting devices and follow a risk assessment for each lift. Avoid lifting by end sections or conductors to prevent damage .

Installation Procedure

  1. Mount the busbar firmly to the supports without forcing joints .
  2. Install joint packs carefully, using hand pressure or a suitable clamping arrangement; do not strike or force the joint .
  3. Lower the busbar until it contacts the expansion ribs on the joint pack .
  4. Install cable trays alongside or beneath the busbar, ensuring proper spacing, bend radius, and layer configuration for multiple cables .
  5. Secure cables within the tray using clamps or ties, maintaining separation from other services to prevent interference .

Safety Considerations

  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times .
  • Avoid manual lifting of busbar sections over 25 kg; use mechanical aids .
  • Inspect busbar sections for damage before installation and report any issues .
  • Maintain ergonomic posture and avoid awkward positions when accessing tight spaces .

Post-Installation

After installation, verify that all busbar sections are level, plumb, and securely fastened. Ensure cable trays are properly aligned and that cables are organized to allow future maintenance or expansion . By following these steps, busbar-dedicated cable trays can be installed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with best practices, ensuring reliable power distribution and long-term system performance .
