How to place optical cables on an optical cable reel

Proper placement of optical cables on a reel involves connecting the cable correctly, aligning fibers, maintaining tension, and winding evenly to prevent damage and signal loss.

Step-by-Step Procedure

1. Prepare the Reel and Cable

  • Inspect the reel and cable for any visible damage before starting. Ensure the reel is on a stable stand or jack that allows it to rotate freely .
  • Check the direction of unspooling indicated by arrows on the reel flange to avoid twisting the cable . 2. Connect the Cable
  • Attach the deployment cable to the non-rotating connectors on the side of the reel as required .
  • Insert the cable into the drum exit port and align the fibers with the slots in the exit cover. Push the cover horizontally until it snaps into place . 3. Secure the Cable
  • Rotate the drum 180° clockwise by hand and use a zip tie to secure the cable to the tie-down block .
  • If the reel has a drum brake, adjust it to the desired tension to control winding speed and prevent slack . 4. Wind the Cable
  • Insert the crank handle into the reel and begin winding the cable evenly across the drum. Maintain a slight, consistent tension to avoid loose loops or piling on one side .
  • For long cables, consider using a "figure-8" pattern on the ground before final winding to prevent kinks and torsional stress . 5. Special Considerations
  • If the reel has spring rewind or cable guide options, follow the manufacturer's instructions for these features .
  • Avoid laying the reel on its side or pulling the cable over the flange, as this can introduce twists and micro-cracks in the fiber .
  • Keep the cable clean and within the recommended temperature range during handling and storage . 6. Stow the Crank Handle
  • Remove the crank handle, fold it 90°, and insert it into the square feature on the chassis side plate for safe storage .

Handling and Storage Tips

  • Always move the drum upright and use proper lifting equipment to prevent damage to the flanges or cable layers .
  • Roll the drum only in the direction indicated to avoid loosening or kinking the cable .
  • Store reels with sufficient spacing and use stoppers to prevent accidental rolling . By following these steps, you ensure that the optical cable is wound safely, maintains signal integrity, and is ready for deployment or storage without damage.
