Telstra InfraCo is constructing an intercity fibre network spanning nearly 14,000 km, connecting major Australian cities from north to south and east to west, while creating access points for regional and remote areas . The project involves laying two main cables along these routes: a pink express path for high-speed, long-distance connections between capital cities, and a blue foundation path to enable future regional expansion . This network is designed to support ultra-low-latency, high-capacity data transmission, facilitating technologies like AI and large-scale digital services . The investment for this and related fibre initiatives is up to $1.6 billion, including expansions in the Pilbara and partnerships for satellite ground networks . The Telstra Wamarra Project complements this effort, providing a detailed map of fibre optic routes across Australia, particularly in New South Wales, and supporting network redundancy and regional connectivity . Telstra InfraCo oversees the infrastructure, offering core transport and connectivity solutions for businesses and government entities .
Subsea Fibre Optic Projects
In addition to terrestrial networks, Google's Australia East subsea cable project spans 4,215 km, linking Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria, and connecting to global networks . This project includes plough burial, ROV jetting, and surface laying of cables, with installation planned to begin in November 2025 and expected to take approximately six months . The subsea cables, part of the Pacific Connect and Australia Connect Initiatives, will enhance data security, resilience, and capacity, connecting Australia to the US, New Zealand, French Polynesia, and Asia . Environmental assessments and marine route surveys have been conducted to ensure safe installation and minimal ecological impact .
