Polar Connect is a Northern European project aimed at creating a resilient and ultra-high-capacity submarine fiber-optic link between Europe and East Asia, following the shortest route through the central Arctic Ocean . The Arctic route offers lower latency due to its shorter distance compared to traditional routes and provides digital sovereignty and network resilience for Europe .

Strategic and Research Significance

The project addresses the growing need for secure, high-speed data connections in light of changing geopolitical conditions . Beyond commercial and research connectivity, the cable will function as a scientific instrument, allowing continuous monitoring of Arctic environmental conditions such as temperature and ocean flows . EU Funding and Support

The European Commission has allocated up to €44.6 million from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Digital) program to support Swedish actors in the project, including €3.545 million specifically for Polar Connect Step 1 . Related Fiber Initiatives in Sweden

In parallel, Eastern Light is expanding Nordic fiber infrastructure, including direct submarine cables between Sweden and Finland, with ongoing projects like Sweden-Finland II to provide fully diverse, end-to-end dark fiber routes for hyperscalers, cloud providers, and carriers .
