Distribution box dimensions concealed installation

Distribution boxes should be sized according to circuit load and switch arrangement, installed at 1.5–1.8 meters height in dry, ventilated areas, with proper grounding and IP/NEMA-rated enclosures.

Dimensions

Residential or small power distribution boxes:

  • For boxes handling lighting circuits or small power loads with incoming wire size <10 mm² and fewer than 20 switches:
    • Width: Sum of switch widths + 20 mm on each side
    • Height: Switch height + 40 mm
    • Depth: Maximum switch depth + 10 mm
  • For more than 20 switches or larger wire sizes, consider two rows of switches and allow extra space for bending radius and terminal connections . Industrial or outdoor boxes:
  • Fabricated from 2 mm GI sheet steel with reinforced structure
  • Roof slightly slanted with 50 mm overhang for water runoff
  • Locking system with corrosion-resistant handles
  • IP-55 or higher protection for dust and water ingress
  • Adequate clearance around bus bars and MCCBs for heat dissipation .

Concealed Installation Requirements

Site selection:

  • Install close to the power source to minimize voltage drop
  • Avoid humid, corrosive, or flammable environments
  • Ensure good ventilation to prevent overheating Height and fixing:
  • Bottom edge typically 1.5–1.8 meters above floor for easy access
  • Use firm mounting brackets or screws to prevent tilting or vibration
  • Leave sufficient space around the box for maintenance and airflow Wiring and safety:
  • Turn off power before wiring
  • Use high-temperature resistant copper wires with appropriate cross-section
  • Maintain neat wiring with proper insulation and labeling
  • Ground all metal parts, including the box and internal components
  • Ensure protective neutral wire is reliably connected
  • Include breakers, fuses, surge protectors, and separate protection for each circuit Enclosure considerations:
  • Choose material based on environment: steel, stainless steel, plastic, or fiberglass
  • Select IP/NEMA rating according to indoor/outdoor exposure (e.g., IP66 for outdoor)
  • Ensure sufficient internal space for current and future equipment, with good air circulation to prevent overheating Maintenance and inspection:
  • Label all circuits clearly
  • Schedule regular inspections and testing with multimeters
  • Consider modular designs for easier upgrades . By following these dimension guidelines and concealed installation requirements, distribution boxes can ensure safety, accessibility, and long-term reliability for both residential and industrial electrical systems.
