Functional Types of Relay Protection Actions

  1. Overcurrent Relay Action Operates when current exceeds a preset threshold. It can be:
    • Instantaneous: Trips immediately without intentional delay, used for high-speed fault clearing.
    • Time-Delay: Operates after a delay inversely proportional to fault magnitude, allowing coordination with upstream or downstream relays .
  2. Differential Relay Action Compares currents at two or more points. If the difference exceeds a set value, it trips the breaker. Commonly used for transformers, generators, and busbars to detect internal faults .
  3. Distance (Impedance) Relay Action Measures the impedance between the relay location and the fault. Trips when impedance falls below a set value, typically used for transmission line protection .

  • Pickup Value: The minimum actuating quantity (current or voltage) at which the relay initiates action .
