  2. Grounding Electrode Conductor (GEC): A copper wire connecting the grounding electrode to the main panel's grounding bus bar. Its size depends on the service-entrance conductors; for a typical 200-amp service, a #4 AWG copper conductor is common .
  3. Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC): Runs with branch circuits to provide a path for fault current back to the panel. Its size is based on the overcurrent device rating .
  4. Main Bonding Jumper (MBJ): Connects the neutral bus bar to the grounding bus bar in the main panel, ensuring the neutral is bonded to the grounding system only at the first point of disconnect .

Installation Guidelines

  • Drive the grounding rod vertically into the earth near the main panel, ensuring at least 8 feet of contact with soil .
  • Connect the GEC securely to the rod using a corrosion-resistant clamp and run it to the panel's grounding bus bar .
  • Bond the neutral and ground bars only in the main service panel, not in subpanels, to prevent parallel neutral paths and potential shock hazards .
  • Ensure all branch circuit ground wires are connected to the grounding bus bar, providing a continuous path for fault current .
  • If a single rod does not achieve a resistance of 25 ohms or less, install a second electrode and bond it to the system .

Safety and Compliance

All grounding and bonding work must comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 250, which specifies conductor sizing, electrode types, and bonding requirements .
