Reflective fiber optic displacement sensors (RFODS) are widely used for precise, non-contact measurement of displacement, vibration, surface conditions, and lateral movements in industrial, medical, a...
Reflective fiber optic displacement sensors operate by transmitting light through an optical fiber to a target surface and measuring the intensity of the reflected light received by one or more receiving fibers. The reflected light intensity varies with the distance between the probe and the target, allowing accurate displacement measurement. Advanced designs use multiple receiving channels or reflective grating panels to compensate for variations in target reflectivity and enhance measurement accuracy .
1. Industrial and Manufacturing Applications RFODS are used in precision engineering and micro-assembly for monitoring small displacements, vibrations, and surface conditions. They are particularly valuable in environments where traditional contact sensors are impractical due to size constraints or harsh conditions. For example, they can measure lateral displacement in machinery, monitor vibration amplitudes, and detect surface irregularities . 2. High-Temperature and Harsh Environments Reflective fiber optic sensors can operate in high-temperature environments where conventional electronic sensors may fail. The use of reflective grating panels and specialized fiber probes allows accurate displacement measurement even under extreme thermal conditions . 3. Medical and Biomechanical Applications In medical instrumentation, RFODS are applied for non-contact measurement of small movements, such as in surgical tools, prosthetics, or micro-manipulation tasks. Their small size, flexibility, and non-intrusive nature make them suitable for delicate applications . 4. Surface Condition and Quality Control RFODS can assess surface reflectivity, roughness, and texture by analyzing the reflected light intensity. This capability is used in quality control processes to ensure uniformity and detect defects in manufactured components . 5. Optical and Scientific Measurement Systems Reflective fiber optic sensors are integrated into optical measurement setups, such as fiber optic grating rulers, to detect lateral displacement, count optical signals, and determine movement direction. These systems are used in research laboratories and advanced fabrication machines .
