Technical Requirements for Distribution Box Assembly

Distribution box assembly must comply with IEC/EN 61439 standards and national safety regulations, covering design, materials, installation, electrical ratings, and verification procedures.

Design and Standards Compliance

Distribution boxes and low-voltage switchgear assemblies should be designed according to IEC 61439 / EN 61439, which defines the general requirements for low-voltage switchgear assemblies, including operating conditions, assembly requirements, technical properties, and verification options . Compliance ensures safety for personnel, property, and equipment, and is confirmed through a Declaration of Conformity by the manufacturer . The standard applies to assemblies up to 630 A and includes both general requirements (IEC 61439-1) and product-specific sections (IEC 61439-2 to -7), .

Materials and Mechanical Requirements

  • Enclosure materials: Steel plates are standard; insulating plates are acceptable; wood is not recommended .
  • Thickness: Steel plate enclosures ≥1.5 mm; power distribution cabinets ≥2.0 mm; doors/panels ≥2.0 mm; back panels ≥3.0 mm .
  • Mounting: Non-floor-standing boxes require welded mounting lugs (40×4 mm, 10 cm length) at bottom left and top right .
  • Internal structure: Guide rails and component positions must be sturdy, complete, and comply with national standards .

Electrical and Installation Requirements

  • Interfaces: Consider installation/ambient conditions, operation/maintenance, connection to the public power supply, and electrical circuits/consumers .
  • Ratings: Determine rated current (InA), outgoing circuit current (InC), short-time withstand current (Icw), thermal power dissipation, and rated diversity factor (RDF) according to IEC 61439 .
  • Installation height: Fixed boxes 1.3–1.5 m from the ground; mobile boxes 0.6–1.5 m .
  • Spacing: Distance between distribution and switch boxes ≤30 m; horizontal distance to fixed equipment ≤3 m .
  • Dedicated protection: Each equipment must have its own switch and RCD (“one equipment, one switch, one RCD” rule), .
  • Connection rules: High-voltage supply lines must not use plug connectors .

Assembly and Verification

  • Assembly steps: Collect project data, design and verify assembly, manufacture, marking, and documentation .
  • Verification: Routine tests include checking temperature rise, short-circuit withstand, and correct installation of components .
  • Documentation: Maintain checklists, technical data, and verification reports to ensure compliance with IEC/EN 61439 .

Safety and Operational Considerations

  • Access: Only skilled personnel should operate or maintain switchgear assemblies; some enclosures may be designed for ordinary users with IP-rated protection .
  • Sealing: Incoming/outgoing wire openings must be sealed to Class 3 standards after assembly .
  • Flexibility: Modular designs allow easy replacement or addition of MCBs, incomers, and other components without obstructing other devices . By following these standards and technical specifications, distribution boxes can be safely assembled, installed, and maintained, ensuring compliance with both international standards and national safety regulations.
