Grounding method for on-site distribution box

The on-site distribution box should be grounded using dedicated ground wires from the box to the mounting plate and then to the central grounding point, ensuring a total ground resistance below 0.1 Ohm.

Recommended Grounding Procedure

  1. Ground Wire Connections
    • Attach a ground wire from one of the threaded studs at the bottom of the distribution box housing to the mounting plate.
    • Connect a second ground wire from the mounting plate to the factory or central grounding point .
    • This ensures all metallic parts are at the same potential, reducing the risk of electric shock and equipment damage .
  2. Wire Sizing
    • For the US market, use a 10 AWG (5.26 mm²) ground wire for the box-to-mounting plate connection.
    • For other markets, a 6 mm² wire is recommended .
    • For connections between the mounting plate and spindle plate, use 16 mm² (or 6 AWG / 13.29 mm² in the US) to maintain low resistance, especially for longer tool cables .
  3. Ground Resistance Requirements
    • The total resistance between all system parts should be less than 0.1 Ohm.
    • If multiple grounding paths exist, calculate the parallel resistance to ensure compliance .
    • For on-site installations, test the grounding system to verify resistance is below 25 Ohms for safety and reliability .
  4. Material and Installation Considerations
    • Use high-quality copper or copper-bonded steel conductors to prevent corrosion and maintain conductivity .
    • Ensure all metal enclosures, raceways, and equipment grounding conductors are bonded into a continuous system .
    • Avoid shortcuts like double-tapping neutrals or using substandard rods, as these can compromise safety .
  5. System Protection and Compliance
    • Proper grounding stabilizes voltage levels, protects equipment from transient overvoltages, and allows protective devices to operate correctly .
    • Follow NEC and IEEE standards for equipment grounding and ground fault detection, including the use of 4-pole transfer switches when required . By following these steps, the distribution box will be safely grounded, minimizing electrical hazards and ensuring reliable operation of the on-site power system.
