Layout and Rack Arrangement

In a cold aisle configuration, server racks are positioned so that the fronts of the racks face each other, forming a corridor known as the cold aisle. Cool air is supplied from perforated floor tiles or dedicated air outlets into this aisle, and servers draw this air through their front intakes. The heated exhaust air exits from the back of the racks into adjacent hot aisles, which are then directed back to the cooling system . Standard cabinets often have a width of 800mm (600mm equipment space plus 200mm side space) and a depth of 1150mm, with side compartments for cable management to improve reliability and aesthetics .

Containment and Isolation

Cold aisle containment (CAC) involves enclosing the cold aisle with physical barriers, such as doors at each end, ceiling panels, and side panels, to prevent cold air from mixing with hot exhaust air. This ensures that the coldest air reaches server inlets, maintaining uniform temperatures and reducing hotspots . The upper part of the aisle can be sealed with tempered glass or micro-perforated ceilings to maintain airflow while improving energy efficiency . Galvanized iron sheets or additional panels may be added to prevent return air from entering the cold aisle and to balance air suction across the room .
