Transimpedance Amplifier Connection Method

A transimpedance amplifier is connected by feeding the sensor current into the inverting input of an op-amp, placing a feedback resistor from output to input, and optionally adding a compensation capacitor to stabilize the circuit.

Basic Connection

  1. Op-Amp Selection: Use a high-speed, low-noise operational amplifier suitable for current-to-voltage conversion .
  2. Input Connection: Connect the current-output sensor (e.g., photodiode) to the inverting input of the op-amp. The non-inverting input is typically grounded or set to a reference voltage for single-supply operation .
  3. Feedback Resistor (R_F): Place a resistor from the op-amp output back to the inverting input. This resistor sets the transimpedance gain according to V_OUT = -I_IN × R_F .
  4. Compensation Capacitor (C_F): In high-speed or high-capacitance applications, add a small capacitor in parallel with R_F to stabilize the amplifier and prevent oscillations caused by parasitic capacitances from the sensor, op-amp, and PCB .
  5. Sensor Biasing: For photodiodes, connect in photovoltaic mode (no bias) for low noise or reverse bias for higher speed. The cathode typically goes to the inverting input, and the anode to ground or reference .

Practical Considerations

  • Virtual Ground: In single-supply systems, a mid-supply reference can be applied to the non-inverting input to allow the output to swing above and below this reference .
  • PCB Layout: Minimize parasitic capacitance and inductance by keeping traces short and placing the feedback resistor and capacitor close to the op-amp .
  • Input Impedance: The TIA presents a low impedance to the sensor, maximizing current-to-voltage conversion efficiency .
  • Output Connection: The op-amp output provides a voltage proportional to the input current, which can be fed to ADCs, microcontrollers, or other signal processing stages . By following this connection method, the TIA efficiently converts sensor current into a stable voltage output while maintaining high bandwidth and low noise performance.
