Structure diagram of single-mode optical fiber

A single-mode optical fiber consists of a small central core, surrounded by cladding with a slightly lower refractive index, and protective coatings for mechanical strength and durability.

Structure Overview

A single-mode optical fiber is a cylindrical dielectric waveguide designed to carry only one spatial mode of light. Its structure can be described in layers from the center outward:

  1. Core:
    • The central region through which light propagates.
    • Typically 8–10 micrometers in diameter at telecom wavelengths.
    • Made of high-purity silica glass with a slightly higher refractive index than the cladding to confine light via total internal reflection .
  2. Cladding:
    • Surrounds the core and has a slightly lower refractive index than the core.
    • Usually about 125 micrometers in diameter, forming the standard 9/125 µm single-mode fiber.
    • Ensures light remains guided within the core and reduces signal loss .
  3. Primary Coating (Buffer Layer):
    • A soft polymer layer that protects the fiber from microbending and mechanical stress.
    • Provides flexibility and prevents physical damage to the core and cladding .
  4. Secondary Coating / Jacket:
    • A tougher outer layer that provides additional mechanical strength, moisture resistance, and protection against environmental factors.
    • Ensures long-term reliability without interfering with optical propagation .

Key Features

  • Single-mode operation: Only the fundamental mode (LP01) propagates, minimizing intermodal dispersion and allowing long-distance, high-bandwidth transmission .
  • Precise fabrication: Core diameter and refractive index profile are tightly controlled to ensure efficient light guidance and minimal signal loss .
  • Applications: Long-haul telecommunications, submarine cables, coherent optical networks, fiber lasers, and precision sensing . This structure ensures that light travels in a single path, reducing distortion and maintaining signal integrity over distances of tens to hundreds of kilometers.
