Step 1: Plan and Survey

Before installation, conduct a pre-survey to plan the cable route, check pole conditions, and identify obstacles such as trees, buildings, or power lines. Ensure sufficient clearance from electrical cables and other telecom lines, following recommended separation distances . Determine the span length between poles, typically 25–40 meters in urban areas and up to 67 meters in rural sections .

Step 2: Select the Cable Type and Hardware

  • ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting): Non-metallic, self-supporting cables that can be installed near power lines. Requires ADSS anchor clamps to secure the cable without damaging the jacket .
  • Figure-8 / Self-supporting: Integrated steel messenger; can be hung directly on poles with suspension clamps.
  • Lashed cables: Fiber is lashed to a pre-installed messenger strand using lashing wire and proper spacing . Hardware includes cable clamps, hooks, saddles, and suspension clamps. Choose sizes compatible with the cable diameter and ensure dielectric materials are used near power lines .

Step 3: Attach the Cable to Poles

  1. Install anchor clamps or hooks at the pole according to the design height and spacing. Hooks are typically spaced 50 cm apart with minimal deviation .
  2. Secure the cable in the clamp or hook without over-tightening to avoid crushing the jacket or causing microbends. ADSS clamps distribute tension evenly along the cable .
  3. Maintain proper sag: The cable should have slight sag to accommodate wind and ice loads, generally less than 2% of the span length, and tension should not exceed 30% of the cable's minimum breaking strength .
  4. Respect bend radius: Minimum bend radius under tension should be 20 times the cable diameter; after installation, maintain at least 10 times the diameter .

Step 4: Manage Splices and Service Loops

  • Attach splice closures to poles using service loops secured with cable ties or showshoe turnarounds.
  • Ensure no loose cables hang from the span; all loops must be properly fastened .

Step 5: Safety and Inspection

  • Use temporary guying if needed to relieve unbalanced loads during installation .
  • Inspect the installation for proper tension, sag, and clearance. Ensure cables are high enough to clear traffic and obstacles.
