How to reset a router in a fiber optic network

You can reset a fiber optic router or ONT by performing a soft reset (power cycle) or a hard reset (factory reset), following careful steps to avoid data loss and restore connectivity.

Understanding the Devices

In a fiber optic network, your router is often connected to an ONT (Optical Network Terminal), which converts optical signals from your ISP into electrical signals for your devices . Resetting either device can resolve issues like slow internet, intermittent connectivity, or configuration conflicts .

Soft Reset (Power Cycle)

A soft reset is the simplest method and usually resolves minor issues:

  1. Power off the device: Unplug the power cord from your router or ONT. Do not unplug the fiber optic cable itself .
  2. Wait: Allow 30–60 seconds for the device to discharge and clear temporary glitches .
  3. Power on: Plug the power cord back in and wait for the device to boot up. This may take a few minutes as the device reconnects to your ISP .
  4. Verify connectivity: Check that your devices can access the internet and that speeds are stable .

Hard Reset (Factory Reset)

A hard reset restores the device to its original factory settings and should be used if a soft reset does not resolve the issue:

  1. Locate the reset button: Usually a small recessed button on the back or bottom of the router or ONT .
  2. Press and hold: Use a paperclip or pin to press and hold the button for 10–15 seconds until the device lights flash .
  3. Release and reboot: Release the button and allow the device to restart. This will erase custom configurations, including Wi-Fi passwords and port forwarding settings .
  4. Reconfigure settings: After reboot, you may need to set up your network again, including Wi-Fi credentials and any custom configurations .

Precautions

  • Backup settings: Note down your Wi-Fi name, password, and any custom configurations before performing a hard reset .
  • Disconnect devices: Unplug connected devices to prevent accidental data loss .
  • ISP guidance: Contact your ISP if unsure, as some ONTs may require re-activation after a factory reset .
  • Notify users: Inform others on the network to avoid interruptions during the reset .

Optional Remote Reset

Some fiber routers allow remote reboot via a web interface or mobile app. Log in using your router's IP address or the ISP's app, then select the restart option . By following these steps, you can safely reset your fiber optic router or ONT, resolve connectivity issues, and restore optimal network performance.
