Optical cables, or fiber-optic cables, transmit data as light through glass or plastic fibers, and their structure and deployment can be visualized through interactive maps and technical drawings.

Structure of Optical Cables

Fiber-optic cables consist of a core surrounded by a cladding layer with a slightly lower refractive index, enabling total internal reflection to guide light efficiently . The core and cladding are coated with protective layers, often acrylate or polyimide, to prevent damage and reduce signal loss . Multiple fibers can be bundled together with a resin buffer and encased in a protective sheath, which may include steel or Kevlar strands for strength . Some designs include light-absorbing materials to reduce crosstalk between fibers .

Types of Fiber-Optic Cables

Fiber-optic cables are classified based on mode and performance:

  • Single-mode fibers: Designed for long-distance communication with minimal signal loss.
  • Multimode fibers: Include OM1, OM2, OM3, and OM4 types, optimized for different bandwidths and distances. For example, OM3 can transmit 10 Gbps up to 1000 meters and 40 Gbps up to 400 meters . Data is transmitted as pulses of light generated by lasers or LEDs, which are then converted back to electrical signals at the receiver .

Performance Characteristics

Optical cables transmit data at near the speed of light in glass, approximately 180,000–200,000 km/s, resulting in very low latency (around 11 milliseconds for 1000 km), . Signal loss is measured in decibels (dB), with typical modern multimode fibers experiencing 1–3 dB/km depending on wavelength .
