Installation Steps

  2. Insert the Module: Align the SFP module with the port and gently slide it in until it clicks into place. The module is now mechanically locked.
  3. Connect the Fiber Cable: Insert the fiber optic cable (typically with an LC connector) into the module. Ensure the cable is compatible with the module type (single-mode or multimode) and that it is installed in pairs for proper transmission .
  4. Secure the Module: Fold the bracket or clip back up to lock the module in place. The switch should now recognize the module automatically if it is compatible .
  5. Verify Operation: Check the switch interface for link status and ensure the module is operating at the intended speed. Some modules support Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM/DOM) to monitor temperature, voltage, and optical power .

  • Port and Module Type: SFP modules generally fit SFP+ ports, but the speed and functionality depend on the host switch PHY and firmware .
  • Fiber Type and Wavelength: Ensure the module matches the fiber type (single-mode or multimode) and wavelength requirements.
  • Vendor and MSA Compliance: Modules from different vendors can work if they comply with MSA standards, but some switches may require firmware support for third-party modules .
