Papua New Guinea Fiber Optic Sensor Fiber Optic Cable

Papua New Guinea's fiber optic network is supported by multiple submarine cables, extensive domestic fiber networks, and local suppliers, providing high-capacity, reliable connectivity.

Submarine Fiber Optic Cables

Coral Sea Cable System (CS2) The Coral Sea Cable System is a 4,700 km submarine fiber optic cable connecting Port Moresby, PNG, and Honiara, Solomon Islands to Sydney, Australia. It uses Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) at 1550nm and repeated 100G technology, delivering up to 20 Tbps capacity to PNG. The system includes highly reliable repeaters, robust Data Communication Networks, and software-configurable client interfaces, significantly enhancing PNG's international connectivity and reducing reliance on satellite communications . PPC-1 (PIPE Pacific Cable 1) The PPC-1 system includes a PNG Spur connecting Madang to the Australia-Guam Trunk, providing initial capacity of 20 Gbps. The system is privately owned and operated, with historical upgrades increasing its capacity and reliability . Google Undersea Cables Google, funded by Australia under the Pukpuk Treaty, is building three new undersea cables in PNG to link the north and south of the country and the Bougainville autonomous region. These high-capacity cables aim to upgrade PNG's digital backbone, lower internet costs, and attract global digital investment .

Domestic Fiber Network

PNG DataCo operates over 12,000 km of fiber optic cable, covering 44 districts via fiber and achieving 70% district connectivity. The network includes three data centers, 51 satellite infrastructures, and five international Points of Presence (PoPs) in Australia, Guam, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. This infrastructure supports low-latency, high-availability telecommunications and digital services across PNG .

Local Fiber Optic Suppliers

Cetelnet in Port Moresby supplies a wide range of fiber optic products and tools, including:

  • Single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables for indoor, outdoor, aerial, and underground installations
  • Patch cords, pigtails, splice enclosures, and distribution boxes
  • Optical Distribution Frames (ODF) and patch panels
  • Connectors, adapters, couplers, and fiber installation tools Cetelnet provides local stock, fast delivery, and technical support, making it a key supplier for fiber optic deployment in PNG .

Summary

Papua New Guinea's fiber optic ecosystem combines international submarine cables, a robust domestic fiber network, and local suppliers to support high-speed internet, economic growth, and digital development. The combination of CS2, PPC-1, Google's upcoming cables, and DataCo's domestic network ensures PNG is increasingly connected to global and regional digital infrastructure, while local suppliers like Cetelnet provide the necessary equipment and expertise for deployment and maintenance.
