Multimode fiber (MMF) is ideal for short-distance home or building networks, offering cost-effective, high-speed connectivity with multiple light modes through a larger core.

What is Multimode Fiber?

Multimode fiber optic cables have a larger core diameter (typically 50 µm or 62.5 µm) that allows multiple light modes to propagate simultaneously. This design makes them suitable for short-range applications, such as home networks, LANs, and data center horizontal cabling, where distances are usually under 300 meters. Multimode fiber uses lower-cost light sources like LEDs or VCSELs, making it more affordable than single-mode fiber for short-distance installations .

Types of Multimode Fiber

Multimode fibers are classified into five main types according to ISO/IEC 11801 standards:

  • OM1: Legacy 62.5 µm core, orange jacket, LED light source. Supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to ~33 meters. Mostly found in older buildings .
  • OM2: 50 µm core, orange jacket, LED source. Supports 1G Ethernet and limited 10G applications up to ~82 meters .
  • OM3: 50 µm core, aqua jacket, laser-optimized for VCSELs. Supports 10G Ethernet up to 300 meters and 40/100G up to 100 meters .
  • OM4: 50 µm core, aqua jacket, enhanced laser-optimized. Supports 10G Ethernet up to 550 meters and higher-speed 40/100G links up to 150 meters .
  • OM5: 50 µm core, lime green jacket, designed for Short Wavelength Division Multiplexing (SWDM). Supports multiple wavelengths over a single fiber, enabling 100G/200G/400G short-range applications .

Choosing Multimode Fiber for Home Use

For home networks, OM3 or OM4 is generally recommended because they provide high-speed performance (10G Ethernet) over typical home distances (up to 100 meters) and are compatible with modern VCSEL-based transceivers. OM1 and OM2 are mostly obsolete for new installations due to limited bandwidth and distance support. OM5 is more advanced but may be unnecessary for standard home setups due to higher cost and limited SWDM device availability .

Advantages of Multimode Fiber for Home

  • Cost-effective: Lower-cost transceivers and light sources compared to single-mode fiber.
  • Ease of installation: Larger core tolerates more alignment variance.
  • High-speed support: Suitable for 10G Ethernet and beyond for short distances.
  • Future-proofing: OM4 or OM5 can support higher data rates if upgrading home networks in the future .

Comparison with Single-Mode Fiber

Single-mode fiber has a smaller core (8–10 µm), supports longer distances, and uses more expensive laser sources. It is ideal for long-distance backbone connections but is overkill for typical home networks, where multimode fiber provides sufficient speed and distance at a lower cost . In summary, for home multimode fiber installations, OM3 or OM4 is the most practical choice, offering a balance of speed, distance, and affordability, while OM1/OM2 are legacy options and OM5 is suitable for advanced, high-capacity setups.
