Geographic Overview

Azerbaijan is a transcontinental country located at the boundary of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, in the eastern part of the South Caucasus region . Its total area is 86,600 km², with a population of approximately 9 million . The country extends between longitude 44°52′E and latitude 38°–42°N, with Baku, the capital, situated at 40°N . The total length of Azerbaijan's borders is 3,472 km, including 825 km of water borders along the Caspian Sea .

Azerbaijan shares land borders with:

  • Iran: 765 km to the south
  • Turkey: 15 km via the Nakhchivan exclave
  • Russia: 390 km to the north
  • Georgia: 480 km to the northwest
  • Armenia: 1,007 km to the west The Nakhchivan exclave is separated from the main territory and borders Armenia, Iran, and Turkey .

Topography

The country is largely mountainous and hilly, with the Caucasus Mountains in the north and central regions and the Lesser Caucasus in the southwest . The Talish Mountains form part of the southern border with Iran. The highest peak is Bazarduzu, reaching 4,466 meters . Lowlands are found along the Caspian Sea coast, which also hosts fertile floodplains suitable for agriculture .

Rivers and Lakes

Major rivers include the Kura (1,515 km) and Araz (1,072 km), which are vital for irrigation and hydroelectric power . Azerbaijan's largest water body is the Caspian Sea, covering 400,000 km² with a maximum depth of 1,025 meters . Other notable lakes include Sarysu (65.7 km²), Agh Gol (56.2 km²), and Boyuk Shor Gol (16.2 km²) .

Key urban centers include Baku, Sumgayit, Ganja, Sheki, Gabala, Lankaran, Zagatala, Guba, Mingachevir, and Shamakhi . Baku, located on the Apsheron Peninsula, is the largest city and the main industrial and cultural hub . Azerbaijan's territory combines mountainous regions, fertile lowlands, and extensive Caspian coastline, making it geographically diverse and strategically located between Europe and Asia .
