Properly laying out optical cable involves careful unspooling, using the cable's strength members, and arranging it in a figure-8 pattern to prevent twists and kinks.

Preparing the Cable

Before laying out the cable, ensure the route is clear of obstacles, sharp edges, or uneven terrain that could damage the fiber during installation. Keep the cable clean by placing it on a plastic sheet or protective surface if it will contact the ground . Always check the manufacturer's specifications for minimum bend radius and maximum pulling tension to avoid damaging the fiber .

Unspooling the Cable

Do not pull the cable directly by its outer jacket. Most fiber optic cables contain strength members such as aramid yarn (Kevlar) or a central fiberglass rod. Use a pulling eye or grip attached to the strength members to safely unspool the cable . This prevents stretching or breaking the delicate glass fibers inside. Avoid dropping the reel or letting it spin uncontrollably, as this can compromise the cable's integrity .

To lay out the cable on the ground, use the figure-8 method:

  • Roll the cable off the spool in a figure-8 pattern rather than straight lines to prevent twists .
  • Each loop of the “8” should be slightly offset from the previous one to minimize mechanical pressure.
  • Pull the cable slowly and carefully, flipping the cable over if necessary so the end to be pulled next is correctly positioned .
  • This method reduces kinking and ensures smooth feeding into conduits or trays.

Additional Tips

  • Use proper lubricants compatible with the cable jacket if pulling through long conduits .
  • Avoid exceeding the cable's maximum pull load.
  • For patch cords, always pull by the connector if it is crimped to the strength member, and clean the fiber ends before connecting .
  • Maintain extra conduit space (25–40%) for future expansion if installing in ducts or trays . By following these steps, you can safely lay out optical cable while preserving its performance and longevity, ensuring a reliable fiber optic network.
