Grounding Conductor Requirements

Each distribution box and controller must be grounded using copper conductors. In the US, a 10 AWG (5.26 mm²) ground wire is standard, while in other markets a 6 mm² wire is typically used . For connections between mounting plates and equipment like spindle plates, larger conductors may be required (e.g., 6 AWG or 16 mm²) to maintain low resistance over longer cable runs . Aluminum conductors are not recommended for buried or underground runs due to corrosion and degradation over time .

Grounding Resistance

The ground resistance between all system parts should be less than 0.1 Ohm to ensure proper dissipation of fault currents . If a single rod does not achieve the required resistance, multiple rods connected with continuous copper conductors should be installed. Approved conductive backfill, such as bentonite clay, is recommended to improve soil conductivity without causing corrosion .

Bonding of Metallic Parts

All metallic parts of the distribution box, including the cabinet body and doors, must be bonded to ground. This prevents static discharge and ensures safety if internal wires contact the enclosure . According to NEC 250.148, metallic junction boxes and cabinet doors must be connected to ground using designated grounding screws or clips. NEC 314.28 requires that all metal boxes be reliably grounded and bonded .

Material Quality and Supplier Standards

Use certified copper rods and conductors with mill certificates to ensure purity and longevity. Counterfeit or low-quality materials can compromise grounding effectiveness . Oversizing wires unnecessarily can cause bonding issues, so wire size should match overcurrent protection and system requirements .

Installation Best Practices

  • Install a dedicated ground bar inside the cabinet; avoid double-tapping neutrals .
  • Test each installation for resistance; if it exceeds limits, add additional rods or improve soil conductivity .
  • Ensure proper connection from the distribution box to the central grounding point of the facility .
  • For outdoor or buried installations, follow local utility or project-specific grounding standards, including rod spacing and conductor sizing . By following these regulations and best practices, distribution boxes will maintain electrical safety, code compliance, and reliable operation.
