Multimode fiber has a larger core, typically 50 µm or 62.5 µm, which allows multiple light modes to propagate simultaneously, making it suitable for short-range, high-capacity connections .

Transmission Distance and Bandwidth

Single-mode fiber is ideal for long-distance communication, capable of transmitting signals over several miles without amplification, and supports higher bandwidths due to reduced modal dispersion .   • Connector type and labeling: Check for fiber type markings (SMF or MMF) and the intended wavelength range. By examining core size, light propagation, wavelength, and intended application, you can reliably distinguish between single-mode and multimode fiber for network design and deployment .
